Why Aftercare Matters – And How to Do It Right

Keep Your Tattoo Looking Fresh for Years to Come

So, you’ve just left the studio with fresh ink – nice one! But the work doesn’t stop there. Aftercare is a huge part of the tattoo process, and doing it properly will make the difference between a vibrant, well-healed tattoo and one that fades or scars.

At Chapter’s, we send every client home with clear aftercare advice, but here’s a deep dive into the why and how.

🧼 Step 1: Keep It Clean

In the first few hours, your tattoo is essentially an open wound. Clean hands only! After removing the protective wrap, wash the area gently with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a clean towel – no rubbing. It does depend on what protective wrap your artist provides, please follow their instructions specifically, they may give you another protective wrap to reapply after the initial clean.

💧 Step 2: Moisturise (But Not Too Much)

Apply a thin layer of tattoo-safe balm like Butterluxe Balm. We swear by it – especially the Pink Gum Edition created by our very own Jamie Lee Knott. It’s thick enough for in-session use and gentle enough for daily aftercare.

Moisturise 2–3 times a day. Too much? You’ll clog pores. Too little? Your skin might crack. Balance is key.

🛑 Step 3: Don’t Pick. Don’t Scratch.

It’s going to itch. That means it’s healing – but resist the urge to scratch or peel the flaking skin. You could damage the design or cause scarring.

☀️ Step 4: Avoid the Sun (and Soaking)

No sunbeds, beaches, pools, or hot tubs for at least 2–3 weeks. Sun exposure can cause your ink to fade fast, and soaking invites infection. Stick to showers!

🔄 Ongoing Care: Keep It Fresh

Even after your tattoo is healed, keep moisturising and wear SPF to protect it. A tattoo is an investment – treat it like one.

“Aftercare is where the magic happens. You’ve done the hard part – now give your skin the love it deserves.”
